Another ski trip report to Andorra!

Issue #6/2025-26

Skiers, here is another ski trip report to Andorra. We went again to the largest of Andorra ski resorts - Grandvalira.

The IKON Pass includes several free ski days in Andorra shared between the 3 resorts of Ordino Arcalís, Pal Arinsal, and Grandvalira. Grandvalira being the largest of three.

A full IKON Pass has 7 free days with no blackout periods, and Ikon Base Plus Pass or Ikon Base Pass have 5 free days and no blackout periods. To redeem lift passes go to the ticket window and show your Ikon Pass to the local operator. We were issued regular, local multi-day lift ticket instead. A ticket was RFID, readable remotely from your pocket, just like the Ikon pass in USA.

And again, where is Andorra, where is Grandvalira Ski Resort?

So, Andorra is a European Principality (not member of EU) between France and Spain, in the mountains of Pyrenees.

The Andorra capital, Andorra la Vella, is a 3hr drive (210km) north of Barcelona, Spain/Catalonia & a similar distance south of Toulouse, France. The lifts up to Grandvalira ski area are only 7km away from the capital, and the resort extends for 17km along the Riu Valira d'Orient valley between Encamp & Pas del la Casa.

The small size of Andorra creates a perfect ski nation, but it is not that easy to go around. Remember there are high mountains and roads are quite narrow with plenty of switchbacks. Snow accumulation is also a factor.

Access lifts for the Grandvalira ski resort start at Encamp. The lengthy Funicamp gondola is the closest to the capital and an incredibly straightforward way to get to & from the skiing (from Encamp village, 6km long, one of the longest gondolas, funitel style (hanging on two cables, instead of one) in Europe).

Andorra doesn't have an airport, so most visitors come into the country via the nearest major airports at Barcelona (BCN) or Toulouse (TLS). Similarly, railway does not penetrate Andorra's borders. A railway station at L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre in France is 12km from Andorra via the mountain pass at Pas de la Casa & provides the most convenient rail access to the nation, but it is actually far from convenient. Bus ride takes a few hours!

We stayed at the village at Pas de la Casa - the eastern-most base area of the Grandvalira ski resort, connected by road to the rest of Andorra via a tolled tunnel in winter.

We again flew from Boston to Barcelona, flight prices are still very decent these days! And from Barcelona, we took a bus (Andbus ie. Andorra Bus) bringing us directly to Pas de la Casa. Pas de la Casa is the highest altitude village in Grandvalira resort. It is right near the border with France at 2,100m elevation. A wide range of accommodations, restaurants, bars & services are available throughout, and it is certainly one of the most snow-secure villages in Andorra (and maybe the entire Pyrenees). Numerous lifts go up, out of the village, to the Col Blanc (mountain pass), which is a right beneath Pic Blanc - the tallest at 2,724m and beyond.

Why Grandvalira... we visited it a year ago and we liked it. It was enough a reason to come here again!

We began our adventure in the evening, right after arrival in Pas de la Casa with ski rental. We used Duna Blanca this time, right on the access pass to the slope, very close to our hotel. Pierre - the owner helped us to choose good skis. Next day we went down to get lift tickets and later up to the top of Pic Blanc ridge. We skied some trails down the Pas de la Casa and moved over to the next valley - Grau Roig. This is a center of the whole resort, the big alpine bowl with lively center down, in the middle, where many lifts converge. The hotels, the ski school, the restaurants - are all there.

The Cubil lift brings you up to the top, from where nice red and black trails bring you back, down. From the same top we went towards Soldeu.

Many good intermediate trails there. In general - trails are groomed and the difficulty level depends on how steep they are. There are places for un-groomed snow, but not that many - these are "free ride" zones.

We passed El Peretol (1,960 m) -the newest sector (added in 2019) located between Soldeu and Grau Roig.

Later, we reached El Tarter base, on the other side of the resort. As we knew the resort after last year visit, we were moving between the parts of Grandvalira at ease. We learned that the trails names are not that important, but the directions towards separate sectors (Pas de la Casa, Grau Roig, El Peretol, Soldeu, El Tarter, Canillo and Encamp) are. They helped to move around smoothly.

Now, more about El Tarter. It is a well known place. Why?

A few reasons. Like the World Cup Slope - it is home to the Àliga run, a famous black piste used for FIS Alpine Ski World Cup downhill races. And we checked it out, yes we did! Very steep, but wide and nicely groomed, easy peasy!

Also, El Tarter hosts the largest freestyle park in the Pyrenees, which attracts pro riders from across Europe. And the Longest Run - you can ski the Gall de Bosc, a 7km (4.3 miles) blue run that takes you from the high ridges all the way back down to the village level.

The neighboring Soldeu (1,800 m) is the technical and high-end heart of the resort. It features the legendary Avet black run used for World Cup technical races (Slalom/GS). We didn't do this trail this time, it will wait for for us till next season. And Soldeu Vibe? Wide, high-quality slopes and luxury hotels (like the Sport Hotel Hermitage). To see and be seen!

At the end of each day we were back at Pas de la Casa. And we were shopping! Big way!

Pas de la Casa is often called the "duty-free capital" of Andorra because of its proximity to the French border. While the entire country has a very low tax rate (4.5% IGI, their version of VAT), Pas de la Casa specifically caters to day-trippers looking for bargains.

However, "tax-free" doesn't mean "unlimited." Since Andorra is not in the EU, there are strict customs allowances you must follow when driving back into France or Spain.

The best savings are typically found on items with high excise taxes in the rest of Europe:

  • Alcohol & Tobacco: Usually the biggest savings.
  • Perfumes & Cosmetics: High-end brands are significantly cheaper than in French or Spanish pharmacies.
  • Electronics: Cameras, smartphones, and GPS units, though price gaps have narrowed in recent years.
  • Ski Gear: Great deals on end-of-season equipment or specialized mountain wear.

Customs Allowances (Per Person)

If you exceed these limits, you are legally required to declare the goods at the border and pay the difference in tax.

Personal Allowance

Cigarettes - 300 units (1.5 cartons)

Spirits (>22%) - 1.5 liters

Wine / Sparkling - 5 liters of table wine + 3 liters of fortified/sparkling wine

Perfume - 75 g of perfume + 375 ml of cologne

Coffee - 1,000 g (or 400 g of extracts)

Other Industrial Goods - Up to €900 in value (€450 for those under 15)

So, Grandvalira is definitely worth visiting! A lot of good skiing and nice European flair - many skiers from all over the world, but mainly from Europe. Add to this great Catalonian cuisine and you end up with really nice vacations!

Let's Polish the Snow!
